Contract cleaning: what’s next in hygiene standards

Workplace hygiene standards have always been a priority for managers, but the Covid-19 pandemic brought these issues under unprecedented scrutiny. New expectations around cleanliness at work are combining with other pressures to make the next 12 months a year of transformational change for the contract cleaning and facilities management sectors.

The pandemic has had a structural effect on so many aspects of our lives but none more so than the way we interact with our workplaces. Even with more hybrid working, offices in particular need to remain important networking and collaboration spaces whilst guaranteeing the safety and comfort of those travelling into work.

Here are five quick trends helping shape the contract cleaning and facilities management sectors in the next 12 months:

1. Touchless tech

From state-of-the-art anti-microbial surfaces that resist bacteria and viruses through to the increased roll out of automatic taps and soap dispensers, expect further innovation and take up of solutions that reduce the chances of germs spreading throughout the workplace.

2. Air quality

The pandemic brought the importance of good ventilation back into the spotlight. The Health and Safety Executive has long-established regulations for ensuring workplaces have sufficient fresh or purified air, but leading businesses are also in a race to the top to kit out offices with the latest air filtration technology. Clearly this equipment will reduce airborne pathogens but it also promotes a more alert and healthier workforce.

3. Flexibility and innovation

As many companies adapt to new norms of workplace location and habits, the contract cleaning sector also needs to keep pace with its own range of flexible and innovative solutions. This might include a performance-based pricing model or agile scheduling; or the deployment of automated cleaning tools driven by smart sensors and real time reporting.  Indeed, the service robotics market is set to continue to grow markedly – but concerns over costs, practicality and privacy will likely prevail.

4. Sustainability

Across the supply chain, businesses that can prove their sustainability credentials have a distinct competitive advantage. Contract cleaning offers the potential to lead the way in terms of using eco-friendly products, conserving energy and water and also reducing waste. As the Better Buildings Partnership points out, consideration of social issues such as contractor welfare is also a fundamental part of embedding ESG best practice within cleaning services.

5. Staffing

The cleaning, hygiene and waste industry is ‘in recovery’ since Covid according to recent research by the British Cleaning Council. However, the news is less positive in terms of staffing shortages, with frequent struggles to replace staff who left the sector in the wake of the pandemic. A focus on workforce recruitment and retention is crucial to the ongoing success and effectiveness of an industry that contributes £59bn to the UK economy.
